Tom N. Chapman was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on September 2,1908, the son of Charles and Rosa Chapman. In 1918 the family moved to a ranch near Ryegate, Montana. In April 1927, Tom married Olive Burlingame. They had a daughter also named Olive. They were divorced a few years later. Tom married Dorothy Hildreath in Butte in 1937. The Butte Miners' Union (BMU) was established in Butte, Montana, in March 1885, a result of the reorganization of the seven-year-old Butte Workingman's Union. The BMU fought for a minimum wage for miners and a closed shop. With chartered branch affiliates in Granite, Neihart, Castle, and Champion, BMU members took the lead in the establishment of the Western Federation of Miners in 1893.
